Neither the Longhorns nor the Sooners will be ranked in this matchup, marking the first time in this series that has happened since 1998 in a 34-3 Texas win. That, of course, was before most of the players in Saturday’s game — if not all — were even born.
How did these teams get to this point? It started with a Week 2 loss by Texas to top-ranked Alabama, a controversial game in which Quinn Ewers was knocked from the game for the final three quarters. Steve Sarkisian and Co. rebounded the following week, but lost a heartbreaker to Texas Tech, 37-34, in overtime.
That said, the Sooners may be worse off than their burnt-orange counterparts, suffering back-to-back losses in shocking fashion (as if the defeats weren’t bad enough). The first of those came in Week 4, when Kansas State put up 41 points against the Sooners; the following week, Oklahoma gave up 55 points in a massive upset by TCU.
That’s 96 points surrendered in two games — unconscionable for defensive coordinator-turned head coach Brent Venables.

The state of those two programs raises questions ahead of their scheduled move to the SEC in 2025, but for now the only thing that matters is the outcome of the game played at the historic Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
Texas has gotten serviceable play from backup Hudson Card in the last three-plus games, in which he has completed 70 of 102 passes (68.6 percent) for 899 yards and six touchdowns to one interception. But the question remains whether Ewers will return to play, and in arguably the Longhorns’ biggest game of the season thus far.
Whoever handles quarterback for Texas on Saturday will go against the Sooners’ Dillon Gabriel, who has completed 63.9 percent of his passes for 1,215 yards and 11 touchdowns to zero interceptions (adding another two scores on the ground).
