NFLPA Collegiate Bowl 2023 players to watch
Malik Cunningham, Louisville QB
Malik Cunningham drew serious buzz heading into the season, and he was recently invited to the NFL Combine.
The prospect is expected to also play at the Senior Bowl, where he’ll undoubtedly get more eyes on him, but this is a good springboard for the Louisville QB. Cunningham didn’t play in Louisville’s Fenway Bowl to end the year to prepare for life after college football.
A fifth-year senior, Cunningham completed 62 percent of his passes for 1,568 yards and rushed 113 times for 560 yards. He accounted for 20 touchdowns, 12 of them coming on the ground.
Emari Demercado, TCU RB
Michigan fans are already acutely aware of Emari Demercado.
The TCU running back rushed for 150 yards on 17 carries in the Horned Frogs’ CFP semifinal win, along with a touchdown.
A longtime backup, Demercado will try to leverage that huge performance into a potential NFL draft pick.
David Perales, Fresno State Edge
Every team in the NFL needs more pass rushing, and David Perales could provide that spark.
To be clear, this is not a comp, but Perales is a high-effort edge rusher who can drop into coverage, much like Aidan Hutchinson, last year’s No. 2 overall pick.
Although Perales doesn’t have the skillset Hutchinson does, the ability to disguise if you’re rushing or dropping is a valuable one to have, and it gives defenses room to flex a player’s role. He could be a mid- to late-round find for a team looking for D-line help.
