Rasputin, the Warmind AI, has been a central figure in Destiny 2 since the game’s Warmind DLC. As the remaining Warmind after the Collapse of humanity, Rasputin has been tasked with protecting Earth from the forces siding with the Darkness and other threats. With the removal of Warmind Cell mods, Rasputin’s role in the game from a gameplay standpoint has become a little murkier. Thankfully, Season of the Seraph has greatly expanded Rasputin’s story in meaningful ways that have tied players to the character more than the mods ever did.

Rasputin’s Future Role in Destiny 2 Ahead of Lightfall’s Removal of Warmind Cells

It’s possible removing Warmind Cell mods may be part of a larger plan to introduce new game mechanics that includes Rasputin as a character. By eliminating these mods, Bungie may be hoping to make Destiny 2 more accessible to players, but also potentially expand upon what Rasputin can bring to the table as a character and as the Warmind. Warmind Cells’ removal is also likely attributed to a shift in focus over at Bungie, which may be looking to explore other narratives away from Rasputin.

Whatever the reason for the mods’ removal, the impact on Rasputin is unclear at best, and troubling at worst for players who enjoy the deeper dive into Warmind territory like many have been during Season of The Seraph. Additionally, some players have speculated that removing Warmind Cell mods may lead to a reduction in the amount of content related to Rasputin in the game. It wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for the removal of Warmind Cells to be a precursor to Rasputin’s death now that his character arc in Season of The Seraph has been largely explored.

Alternatively, the Lightfall expansion could see Rasputin having some involvement with the Guardian’s discovery of Neomuna and the incredible technology that lead to the creation of the Cloud Striders. Now, it would be possible for Rasputin to be involved with whatever game system is meant to replace Warmind Cells (if any) from a story and lore perspective. This could lead to more unique gameplay experiences for players and a greater understanding of the role that the Warminds played in the Destiny 2 universe in the past, present, and future.

Removing Warmind Cell mods from Destiny 2 has caused some uncertainty among players about the future of one of the game’s more interesting characters. However, the reasons for the removal make some sense regarding the Lightfall changes, but it’s interesting to consider what impact such changes will have on Rasputin as a Warmind. It’s unclear whether Bungie will kill him off, or if it plans on integrating what this character can do into future story arcs and gameplay systems. Ultimately, players will have to wait until the Lightfall expansion drops in late February to see what a post-Rasputin/Warmind story arc looks like and how Bungie plans on incorporating him into future story threads.

Destiny 2 is available now on Epic Games Store, PS4, PS5, Steam, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
